Climate
Climate is the long-term pattern of weather in a place, measured over years and decades. It includes average conditions like temperature, rainfall, humidity, wind, and the frequency of storms or droughts. Climate differs from daily weather, which changes from day to day, by focusing on long-term averages and trends. Local geography, oceans, and global circulation all shape a region’s climate. People often describe climate by seasons and typical extremes like hot summers or wet winters. Climate affects ecosystems, agriculture, water supply, and the kinds of buildings and infrastructure that work best. Changes in climate, especially warming and shifts in rainfall, can increase the risk of floods, droughts, and severe storms. Communities need to adapt buildings, transport, and emergency plans to deal with these changes and reduce damage. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions can limit future warming and protect natural and human systems. Understanding climate helps individuals and leaders make decisions that keep people safe and preserve resources for the future.
