Climate Change

Climate change means long-term shifts in average weather patterns, like temperature and rainfall, over many years or decades. It happens because of natural forces but today it is mainly driven by human actions that release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, trapping heat. The result is a warming planet with more frequent and intense events such as heatwaves, heavy storms, droughts, and changing seasons. Warmer air melts ice and makes ocean water expand, which raises sea levels and threatens coastal places. Plants, animals, and ecosystems are forced to adapt, move, or face extinction as habitats change. People feel the effects through damaged homes, losses in farming, health risks from heat and disease, and higher costs for disaster response. Responding involves two main approaches: reducing the emissions that cause the changes, and adapting our communities and infrastructure to withstand them. That matters because decisions made now affect how livable parts of the world will be for future generations and how much money and effort will be needed to cope. Understanding climate change helps you make choices about energy use, where to live, and how communities plan for the future.
